It is a combination of my real name and the pet name my mum (for reasons even she does not remember) used when I was a child. This blog is about work and play, seriousness and fun, and the combination of two names communicates just that. Or so I hope.
My official name is Coco d’Hont. I am a learning & development professional, researcher and writer based in the UK. During office hours I help people grow in their chosen career: I deliver management training, support apprentices, and act as a consultant on a range of business transformation projects. I’m also a passionate independent scholar and have published academic articles and a monograph. My academic research mostly focuses on contemporary culture: literature, film, and occasional forays into music. I like horror, metal music, and all things weird and wonderful (well, most of them…).
When I’m not working, I play. I’m an amateur artist, creator and creative writer. For me these activities are not mere hobbies. Creativity does not always involve pencils, paint, or poetry. It is also the ability to ask questions, to come up with unexpected solutions, to consider alternative perspectives. But of course, they’re fun too.
To unwind from all this thinking, I’ve been practicing shotokan karate for over ten years. I’m the proud owner of a black belt (shodan) and have recently started teaching beginner classes. Martial arts is a great way to do “something completely different” and unwind after a busy day in the office. I’m hoping to continue on this path for many years to come.
When I worked in academia, I didn’t feel the culture was a good fit for me. Who says academics need to be serious all the time, and work seven days a week? Actually, many people do. But I believe it is possible, and even necessary, to do things differently. I produce my best work when I play. And on this blog, I do both. Happy reading!
